A little understanding, before you begin
What is numerology?
A way to understand yourself.
A little more clearly.
Numerology gives numbers symbolic meaning. Drawing on an ancient tradition, it uses your birth name and date to create readings about your qualities and the changing rhythms of your life.
At By Numbers, we bring those readings together to help you recognise familiar parts of yourself, reflect on your experiences and find clarity in your next step.
A name. A date.
A different way to see yourself.
From your details to your readings
Your birth name + birth date.
We use the Pythagorean method. Letters are assigned values from 1 to 9, then combined with your birth date in different calculations. Each calculation explores a different part of your chart.
Letters carry values.
Different combinations of your name’s letters form readings about your abilities, motivations and outward presence.
Dates reveal a pattern.
24 July 1990
2 + 4 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32 → 5
In this example, 5 is the Life Path number. Other calculations describe longer life stages, years and months.
These are examples of the method. Your full chart uses several calculations, with Master Numbers retained where appropriate.
The same details. Different perspectives.
Four ways to explore yourself.

A few useful answers
Before you explore.
You don’t need to learn every calculation to find something useful in your reading.
Why do you use my birth name?
We start with the full name recorded at birth, including middle names. In the Pythagorean method, its letters form the starting pattern for your name-based readings. Using the same name consistently keeps those calculations connected.
What if I’ve changed my name?
For your By Numbers profile, use your original birth name, even if you now use a married name, a chosen name or a nickname. You can explore other names in the Word Calculator; they don’t replace the birth name in your personal chart.
When do the yearly and monthly readings change?
By Numbers follows the calendar: a Personal Year runs from January to December, and a Personal Month follows its calendar month. Longer life stages have their own timing, calculated from your birth details.
How should I interpret a reading?
Start with what you recognise. Think about how a strength, tension or recurring theme shows up in your own experience. A reading offers a perspective to reflect on; your choices and circumstances still shape the path you take.
Why might another numerology reading give a different result?
Different traditions can use different calculation rules, ways of handling Master Numbers or dates for the start of a year. By Numbers uses a consistent Pythagorean approach across your charts.
